Memory monitoring - using SIM v. 7 SP2.1

Hi,

We're running CIM v 7 SP2.1, and are looking for best practices for monitoring memory on Windows 2000 servers.

What are the most useful memory traps available via CIM ?
We're looking for a place to define user thresholds for memory ... are we wasting our time ?

Thanks

There is a good primer on Memory Performance on TechNet: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000pro/reskit/part6/proch27.asp

Simply put, it's not a matter of setting individual thresholds. Analysis and cross-referencing the data is important.

From a hardware bottleneck perspective, the ProLiant Essentials Performance Management Pack is a good and inexpensive solution. A more sophisticated analysis with application knowledge is available by using OpenView Operations for Windows.

Thanks. will review.

But our initial thought, is to have something simple that alerts us on a percentage free threshold for memory.

The cheapest way is to use Insight Manager and set the Pagefile Used threshold under Performance / Server.

Pagefile usage is a side-effect of excessive Memory consumption. This will issues SNMP Traps if the thresholds set are exceeded.

There's probably a number of next options, but we use the Proliant Performance Analyzer, the drawback of this product is that you cannot set the thresholds. But, it integrates well with IM and has useful features like the Alertingas well as Loggin if required.
