Migration from Insight Manager 7 to HP SIM 4.1

We are in the process of migrating from IM 7 to SIM 4.1. I was told by HP that an in-place migration was not possible. Then I found out from reading the "Transitioning from Insight manager 7 to HP systems insight Manager 4.1" white paper, that an in-place migration is possible. In fact, it sounds more safer than a remote migration. I would like to have both 7 and 4.1 up at the same time for testing purpose. But if remote migration involves recreating server certificates as the trust relationship will be broken, redoing SNMP configuration for each server, then I have to go for in-place migration, which does not allow you to have both Insight Manager up at the same time.

I want to know if anyone has gone through this process of migration. Am I correct in my preception? I would appreciate if you can shed some light into this.

Also we are currently running Insight Manager 7 sp 2.1. HP requires you to upgrade to 7 sp2.3 before the migration. Does this affect any services?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Don.

Here is something that I know.

Upgrade from IM 7 SP2.1 to IM7 SP2.3 doesnot cause any problem.

As you rightly said, In-Place migration is possible.

You cannot run both IM7 and HPSIM together on the same machine. One flexibility with in-place migration is that if you are not convinced with HPSIM, you can always roll back to IM7. I guess the whitepaper has the steps to roll back.

Re: Migration from Insight Manager 7 to HP SIM 4.1

If you keep the same IP address and/or DNS name for the "remote server" why would snmp need to be redone on each server?

We are planning on the upgrade to a remote server, since the current IM 7 server doesn't meet the CPU requirements. Plus, we want more hard drive space available for the future.

I was planning giving the new server the same IP as the old server (taking the old server off-line) -- so as to avoid snmp config changes on the server nodes.

Any problems with this idea?

Re: Migration from Insight Manager 7 to HP SIM 4.1

Thank you, AMicSys and Eric, for your contributions.

As in your case, Eric, if you are keeping the same IP address, are you then installing a fresh HP SIM 4.2 on to the new server? I think it may not require you to change any settings in that case.

In my case, I wanted to install SIM on a new server. What I wanted to find is if there is a disadvantage in doing an in-place install.

Thank you again for your help.

Re: Migration from Insight Manager 7 to HP SIM 4.1

I'm doing the remote upgrade -- which takes the current data from my IM 7 setup and imports it to the HP SIMS install on the new server.

We don't use certificates, which is the only thing that doesnt' come over -- we have our servers set to "trust all".

So I don't think that will be an issue.

By doing the remote upgrade (as opposed to in place), we will be able to use new hardware, yet keep all of our current settings (such as discovery ranges, tasks, etc.).

In particular, since we will shut down the old server and reuse its name and IP address, we will be able to keep the same snmp settings on each node.
