Re: Monitoring UPS's
The product info on the UPS you're interested in would be the best place.
As for HPSIM, the UPS needs to be have SNMP configured and just like a Server it will need a suitable community name for discovery and the HPSIM added as the target address for SNMP Traps.
Obviously it's IP Address needs to be in the discovery range.
Finally you'll need to check if the MIBs for decoding the SNMP Traps are available, they might even be pre-built into HPSIM.

Re: Monitoring UPS's
Also, have you checked out Rack and Power Manager? It is a free tool from HP which is specifically designed for this pupose, and should be on the CDs you get with the UPS.
If you want to have all your alerting done through SIM, you can configure R&PM to send SNMP traps to SIM.

Re: Monitoring UPS's
HP UPS information webpage http://www.hp.com/products/ups. If you plan to manage individual UPS with serial/USB connection, I would recommend HP Power Manager software (avail free download). The software is capable of sending SNMP traps (based on UPS alarms) to HPSIM as well. The next version of HPPM will also support networked UPS and better integration with HPSIM.
