MSA1000 and HpSIM

Anyone with an MSA1000 and HpSIM4.1....

I did an auto discovery that should have picked up an MSA1000 that I have on the network and it didn't. If I manually discover then all I get is an ipaddress that has an umanaged system type, though it does say on the system page that it is a Fibre Chanel Switch. Is this odd or normal? Should I have discovered the MSA1000?

Thanks!

Re: MSA1000 and HpSIM

HP SIM will see the MSA through the agents loaded on the hosts and through the Array Configuration Utility...

I'm not all that familiar with the MSA1000, but going through the docs I don't see any references to a network connection or SNMP management or an HTTP interface. You might ask the question in the main ProLiant forum. I know that several storage experts hang out there.

Re: MSA1000 and HpSIM

This is normal. The MSA1000 itself does not have a network interface. If you have the MSA embedded switch (6 or 8) it has a network connection (you can have two switches if you have redundant controllers) Like the other reply the msa is discovered and managed through the server's storage agents (make sure to add Fibre-channel to the active agents in the management agents icon in the control panel). The ACu can also be launched through SIM if the server that you are looking at has remote ACU access enabled. If you do this make sure your password security is very tight as a hacker could potentially blow away all the data on the MSA through this config tool. I'd recommend NOT enabling remote access of the ACU. If you need to configure the box remotely Remote desktop to the server and do it that way. If you want to manage the switches download the Brocade (8-port) or gadzooks (6-port) MIB files and register them in SIM.

Re: MSA1000 and HpSIM

Each SANswitch in an MSA1000 has a network interface for management of the switch.

You can configure the SNMP community names on these switches and they can be discovered by IM7 or HPSIM.

Until the names are configured to ones that HPSIM or IM knows about, and are congfured so that the IM7 or CMS host has access permitted, they show up as unmanaged.

After SNMP is correctly configured they show up as "unknown". There appears to be a MIB issue for these "Brocade" switches sold with the MSA1000.

When the customer gets a little more stable I will be logging a call to get an escalation on this MSA1000 issue, if there isn't one already.

You can manually add additional devices so that they show up as a particular device.
As long as SNMP is running and you know the IP Address it is a fairly simple process.

Thank you everyone for your thoughtful replies. This is what I was thinking as well, but when someone gets the thought in their mind about something I have to try and explain the "otherwise" and you folks have laid that out.
