No SNMP Community String Error, 01/29/05

I've installed HP Insight Management Agent 7.10.0.0 for Windows 2000/Server 2003 on an HP BL10e running Windows 2003 Server. When I go to the server's Homepage, Settings, SNMP Configuration to configure SNMP I get the following error "No SNMP Community String Error" (see attachment). I then go into Computer Management, Services and try to configure SNMP Security there. Unfortunately, I am not allowed to "Add" a new community name.

Any help would be appreciated.

You might try un-installing and re-installing the SNMP service. I've never seen anything like that before.

I have the exact same problem and result. Removing and adding the snmp service didnt solve the problem.
Server is a ML570 G1

Hi David Claypool,

I'm asking for your advice 1) because you are an HP moderator and 2)judging by your Member status and number of points accumulated, you've got quite a lot of experience!

I called HP (800-HP-Invent) and spoke with Arman and then Sharon from the Blade Team. Sharon suggested that I contact you to see if you might escalate this to your engineering division. So far, my group (supporting 450+ HP/Compaq servers) has recently rolled out approximately a dozen new Proliant servers with 2003, all have the same issue. We have more 2003 servers to deploy in the near future and would like to have them covered by SIM.

Thank you very much,

Bill/TJX

P.S.

Serafeim, thank you for confirming that you have the same issue. A solution should help us all.

Jon, thank you for the MS link. I've followed each step precisely with no success.

Re: No SNMP Community String Error, 01/29/05

I did some playing around with it, and I think you may have a setting in group policies. I was able to successfully gray out the buttons on the traps and security tabs.

I won't take you through every single step, but essentially:

Start --> Run --> MMC

File --> Add/Remove Snap-In --> Group Policy --> [Add] --> [Finish] --> [Close] --> [OK]

Navigate to the key [Console Root\Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Network\SNMP]

There are 3 settings in there, Communities, Permitted Managers and Traps for public community. On my system each of them was 'Not Configured.' When I enabled each of them and put an entry in, I no longer had control over the Traps and Security tabs in SNMP Services.

My bet is that there is a policy already set there for you.

I have attached some quick screen shots showing what I did.

Re: No SNMP Community String Error, 01/29/05

David,

Sorry, I didn't mention the group policies earlier. We've previously tried that and can now see/modify SNMP settings both in Services-SNMP-Properties and in the System Managment Homepage, SNMP Configuration. It APPEARS that SNMP is set.

Our problem now is seeing SNMP as a Management Protocol on the servers' System Homepages at our CMS. PMP is also not able to be added to these servers, data isn't being collected, etc.

Thanks,

Bill
