No systems detected with the Version Control Repository Manager

Hi there

I have just managed to install HP SIM 4.02 for the first time, and would like to start "managing" my devices... But here's the trick, I don't know where to start...

Unfortunately, the server I had to install HP SIM on is not an HP/Compaq server. I hope this is not an issue.

I have manually discovered 1 Compaq ML370 server, and according to the documentation I now need to :
-----------------------------
Setting Up Windows Managed Systems
Repeat these steps for each managed system.
To set up a Windows managed system:
Install and configure SSH.
Select DeployDeploy Drivers, Firmware and AgentsInitial ProLiant Support Pack Install. The Initial ProLiant Support Pack Install page is displayed.
---------------------------------

The thing is that when I get to "Step 3: Select a Windows Support Pack", I get the following error message:
No systems detected with the Version Control Repository Manager. Install the VCRM on a system, then run Identification on that system and try again.

The thing is, I have ensured that the latest VCRM is in fact installed on my HP SIM server (remember it is not an HP/Compaq server...)

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could resolve this?

Thanks
William R.

Re: No systems detected with the Version Control Repository Manager

The quick check would be to go to the Options tab on HPSIM and see if there is a link to the VCR there.
Then see if any Servers are listed.

The VCRM Server will need to be discovered even though it is on the HPSIM Server, so in your discovery range, you should include the HPSIM Server.
I've found it easier to use the Auto-Discovery mechanism rather than manually add.
Also, on the Auto-Discovery page, turn off filters.

So, the HPSIM Server should be discovered. If your DNS is correct you should see the IP Address name in the System Name column. Click on whatevers there for the System Details. The Links tab should show a link to the VCRM.

If not, then there could be a problem with SNMP settings or other access.

Re: No systems detected with the Version Control Repository Manager

Yep, Rob's right. It sounds like SIM hasn't 'discovered' that the VCRM is installed and running. It should do this by default on startup the first time, but if for some reason this doesn't happen, just put the IP address of your SIM server in the Auto Discovery page and run discovery on itself. Then it should discover the VCRM running on the SIM server. You can go to the All Systems list and click on the SIM server and click on the Links tab and there should be a link for the VCRM there.

Once the VCRM is discovered, in order to deploy the PSP or anything for the first time, you need to get the latest updates from hp.com or the SmartStart CD (all the components/PSP's). If you have a SmartStart CD, put it in the SIM server and from the autorun it has an option of populating the VCRM from that CD directly. If wanting to update from HP.COM automatically, the VCRM needs at least one Version Control Agent (can be the VCA installed on the SIM server if you installed the PSP locally) to connect to the VCRM to know what types of PSP's to download (Windows, Linux, etc).

Hope that helps.

Re: No systems detected with the Version Control Repository Manager

Thanks for the replies, guys.

I've run an autodiscovery and detected another ~35 servers on my network, but the HP SIM server still shows as System Type=Unknown. The only other columns that are populated for my HP SIM Server are HW and VPM. All other fields are blank. Could this be related to me not being able to "identify" the systems (such as VCRM) running on this server?

Remember I am running on a non-HP server...

Thanks

Re: No systems detected with the Version Control Repository Manager

Hi there

The VCRM is still an issue for me (I'm sur it has something to do with my HP SIM server classified as UNKNOWN), but at the same time I see that there are a number of devices that been discovered as type UNKNOWN.

I've logged this as a separate problem. If you wish you can view it at http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=935415

Hopefully if the UNKNOWN problem is resolved I should be able to identify my VCRM server??

Thanks
