PEVMS - whats in the box?
Hello all,
I'd like to get some clarification on what the Proliant Essentials Virtual Management Software (http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantessentials/valuepack/vms/index.html) actually provides in terms of licences. I've read the Quickspecs & understand that it bundles a combination of:
- ProLiant Essentials Virtual Machine Management Pack (VMM)
- ProLiant Essentials Server Migration Pack (SMP)
and that this software integrates with SIM, which I realise provides 5 free SMP licenses and a 60 day trial of VMM out of the box. My question is what does the PEVMS bundle provide over and above the free licenses provided by SIM? In particular:
- What's the nature of the VMM licence when bundled with a Proliant as part of PEVMS? I imagine that it allows you to manage all VMs on the Proliant in a time-unlimited fashion, and that the license is locked to that Proliant. Is this correct?
- What's the nature of the SMP licence when bundled with a Proliant as part of PEVMS? How many migrations does the license provide? Or is it unlimited but only for migrations to that Proliant/ESX server?
Finally, if these licenses are applied to SIM, are the free licenses maintained or lost?
TIA,
Jason

Re: PEVMS - whats in the box?
Hi Jason,
See inline for inputs to your queries
1. My question is what does the PEVMS bundle provide over and above the free licenses provided by SIM?
Nothing additional. SIM /PEVMS togather offer these demo or free licenses. You can buy the other licenses for PEVMS
In particular:
- What's the nature of the VMM licence when bundled with a Proliant as part of PEVMS? I imagine that it allows you to manage all VMs on the Proliant in a time-unlimited fashion, and that the license is locked to that Proliant. Is this correct?
If you have VMM license which is demo or free, you can manage all the VM's on a VM host where this license is applied for 60 days trial period, beyond which you need to buy a permanant license.
The permanant license when applied is for a box and is for the lifetime of the box. Yes it is locked to the box once licensed.
- What's the nature of the SMP licence when bundled with a Proliant as part of PEVMS? How many migrations does the license provide? Or is it unlimited but only for migrations to that Proliant/ESX server?
There are 2 types of SMP licenses that can be bought, per migration base or time based. When you have time based license, you could do any number of migration within the given time but if you have per migration license, it allows that many number of licenses and you can use them at any time (no time restriction on use of migration based license). This is not per box. The SMP license is not locked to a VM host, you can do anywhere to anywhere only thing is your V target or V source (for P2V, V2V,V2P) should be on the VM host that is managed/licensed by VMM (demo or permanant license)
Finally, if these licenses are applied to SIM, are the free licenses maintained or lost?
Presedence would be paid license and then free, if you have paid license available, the paid license would get consume to save you from trouble of re-licensing the host again after trial period gets over.

Re: PEVMS - whats in the box?
Neeti,
Thanks once again for your response ... most of it is pretty straightforward and as I expected, but I'm still unclear on what you get in terms of SMP licenses when you buy the PEVMS bundle with a Proliant.
I've read the quickspecs on PEVMS, and I too can see that there are licenses limited either by 1) time or 2) number of migrations.
What I'm trying to get to the bottom of, and what I noone seems to be able to tell me is, which sort of SMP license you get when it's purchased as a bundle with a Proliant, time-limited or attempt-limited (and if so how many)?
FYI, when ordering a Proliant + PEVMS you don't seem to be able to specify the type of SMP license included (at least that's the case with the HP ConfigureAIDER tool). Have you bought the PEVMS bundle with a Proliant yourself?

Re: PEVMS - whats in the box?
The PEVMS bundle that ships with the Vmware SKUs contain 1 VMM and 1 SMP license. The VMM license provides ability to license one ESX host and the SMP license provides ability to do 1 migration. Additonal SMP licenses migrations will need to be purchased if the customer wants to do more migrations.
The free licenses in SIM are not lost. Those are still available.
