Polling monitor serial numbers from DMI browser in SIM4.2sp1

Hi everyone,

I am running HP SIM 4.2sp1 on a Windows 2000 server. I have a mix of HP/Compaq branded WinXPsp2 & Win2kPro clients on my network.

As a standard client setup, the Windows Firewall is turned off, and the HP Insight Manager Client 5.01d is installed.

So far SIM works pretty well and polls the network to successfully "see" the clients.

Now, on each Windows client I can go to the HP Information Center program group and then run the DMI Browser (Intel v1.11 DMI Explorer).

From within the DMI explorer I can choose Compaq Monitor Information, and then Component ID. In this screen there is an entry listing for the Serial Number. This lets me see the me see the serial number of the client's monitor. (All my monitors are HP/Compaq branded as well).

Is there a way to get the SIM system to pull this serial number when it gathers client information?

My goal is to view a Systems Listing within SIM, and be able to see the monitor serial number for each system as well.

Thanks in advance for your help!

HP SIM does not collect monitor information as it is a server oriented tool and most servers either have no monitor or are connected to a KVM switch (which would make monitors seem to float around depending on the position of the switch). There are a number of other items that make HP SIM only an OK choice for managing clients.

HP Client Manager is the recommended tool for client management and is FREE: http://h20331.www2.hp.com/Hpsub/cache/284018-0-0-225-121.html

There is an optional connector to HP SIM for HP Client Manager.

Thanks for the reply.

I had tried the "free" version of the HP Client Manager/Altiris suite also. It works pretty well. However I found that in order to get it to do "fancier" stuff - like poll monitor serial numbers, you have to then pay for the additional modules, and it adds up pretty quick. Thanks again though!
