Resolution - Unable to Connect to Specified Database (Upgrade/Install Issue)

OK, I'll try and cut to the chase. Was running SIM 4.0 on W2K3 server and wanted to upgrade to 4.2. Rec'd error (see subject line) and reviewed the other posts in this forum and tried all suggested fixes (except a total rebuild). I beat my head against the wall for an entire day!

My 2nd to last try to get past this error involved extracting all the files from the 4.2 install package and just poking around.

Did this and found the if I ran the SIM4.2_Extract\hpsim\win_ia32\hpsim\hpsim.exe it bypassed all the setup encapsulation and gave me the following error:

The procedure entry point GetTextExtentPointI could not be located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL.

This ultimately led me to the mdac component checker (and the knowledge that W2K3 comes with MDAC 2.8.1022.0 installed and you can't just reinstall MDAC to fix problem).

Ran the component checker and found 1 key file (oledb32.dll) was ver. 2.71.9042.0 ! Walked through the steps in the google link (listed below) and now I'm able to install!

I'd suggest to anyone else running into this issue that they extract the files and run the direct hpsim.exe file so that you can actually (hopefully) see the blasted REAL error!

Good luck.
