server missing or unmanaged

struggling a bit with managing a few of my many servers. I have 2 servers that have all of the managment software installed (v. 70a of support pack, SNMP with correct read_write permissions). When I do an automatic scan for devices either they do not show up on the list or show up as "unmanaged". this was occurring when I was running IM7 sp23 and now HPSIM 4.1. I have tried to uninstall SNMP and agents, reboot, service pack (one is running win2k, the other win2k3), reinstall all software as all my other server are (and all others are working ok). I have tried to manually add this server on both and they simply don't show up or are seen as "unmanaged". I am able to hit both servers on port 2381 and can log in using my standard admin passwords. Anything ideas short of formatting my live server and rebuilding from scratch?

Re: server missing or unmanaged

'Unmanaged' typically means that IM7 or hpSIM can't find a management protocol. At least with WS03 the most common reason for this is that the SNMP service is by default set to only respond to 'localhost.'

OK, so how do we fix that? I also use SIM and 90% of my servers show up unmanaged. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Go into the properties on the SNMP service & select the Security tab - You can then select "Accept SNMP packets from any host" or add in the address of the CMS?

Re: server missing or unmanaged

Thanks. I guess that's not the problem I'm having though, because all of my servers are already set like that.

Thanks again,

Re: server missing or unmanaged

Compare your SNMP settings in SIM for each of the devices against what the server SNMP settings are, particularly the community name settings. These are case-sensitive, so Public is not the same as public.

Re: server missing or unmanaged

Thanks for the info, it was my SNMP name case sensitivity that was causing the problem. What about the READ vs READ_WRITE settings. It appears to work just fine with READ access only, is this correct? And is there something different that should be set on the HPSIM server?

Thanks to all for the help, this forum is now my main source of help with this stuff.

Re: server missing or unmanaged

By having READ_ONLY access, you will not be able to clear any alerts that may be generated, or you may not be able to set notification items such as disk space exceeding the level that you set (70%, 85%, etc.)

Thanks for the help. My problem also was that the global SNMP community was incorrect.
