SIM 4.1 not recieving alerts

Our Sim 4.1 server (BL20P G1, Dual 1.4, 1GB RAM) currently had to have SIM re-installed, with a fresh DB (SQL 2000 STD), due to it no longer being able to discover clients.

We have re-setup the global SNMP settings, users, email notifications and Auto-Discovery templates.

I initially thought that it was a problem with the email notification query, but it turns out the SIM will not pickup alerts (real or 'Send Test Trap') from 95% of clients that it previously would.

There are no IP restrictions, we have even enabled 'Accept unregistered events'

We have applied the MS04-25 and SP26214 Email Storm fixes).

I cannot seem to find any reason why these alerts do not come through.

Clients are set to 'Trust by name', server name is the same, and all clients (800 + Compaq/HP mix) have the correct, configured support PAQ applied.

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks

Re: SIM 4.1 not recieving alerts

Is this WS03 and have you changed the SNMP service to "Accept packets from any host" ?

Thx for the rapid response.

Yes, SNMP is by default 'Accept from any host'.

Re: SIM 4.1 not recieving alerts

What version of OS, as David mentioned, SNMP by default in W2003 has "Allow Selected Hosts Only" for SNMP. Change this to Allow All on the HPSIM Server.
An SNMP Trap sent from the HP Management Agent GUI should generate a Major Alert on HPSIM.

Check that SNMP on the generating side has been changed so that the Trap Destination is the new HPSIM Server.
Also check the Community names are the same at both ends, note they're case-sensitive.

Re: SIM 4.1 not recieving alerts

Hi Rob

OS is W2k, 'accept any traps' IS definately ticked. SIM is recieving SOME alerts so this definately confirms the 'accept any' issue.

The SNMP community strings are DEFINATELY corrcect down to case, and the Community Name and destination are also correct. The agents are set to 'Trust by name', which is also correct.

The servers NOT having their alerts recieved HAVE previously worked fine, and nothing has changed client side.

SIM has been un-installed and re-installed on the server. I have checked all the global settings and these are correct also.

Thanks for your imput, keep 'em comin cuz this is driving me mad!!

Re: SIM 4.1 not recieving alerts

There is an SNMP Listener utility you can get hold of, it just listens on the SNMP Port.
Run it on the HPSIM Server and then use the HP Mnagement Agent GUI to send an SNMP Trap from one of the non-working Servers.
This will identify whether it is an HPSIM issue or whether the Trap is simply not getting there.
I'll try and find out what the utility was I've used in the past.

A google on snmputil will find it.

Re: SIM 4.1 not recieving alerts

Hello again Rob.

Tried SNMPUTIL from the 2K resource kit, and to be honest it lost me!

However, I sent a 'Test Trap' from one of my IM clients, whilst running an Ethereal Net monitor. This confirmed that the trap WAS recieved from the client, which in my mind proves that the IM server IS receiving traps, and IM seems to be the problem.

Interestingly, test traps I sent before I started this thread, have now shown up. A bit bloody late!

I'm sending all the evidence to HP and seeing what they come up with, I'll keep everyone informed!

Re: SIM 4.1 not recieving alerts

What caught me out once was test traps from our Storage Management Appliance that turned up as Informational Events where I was used to Major Events being generated.

From a cmd prompt cd to the snmp util directory and enter snmputil trap.
This then listens for snmp traps and if one arrives shows the details.

But you've already proved SNMP Traps are getting there. Not too sure why HPSIM is not identifying them.

Re: SIM 4.1 not recieving alerts

Ahhh, ok I'll try that to double check. Thanks Rob.

I've also had test traps come through as info, when they are meant to be major....

(bloody free product thats the problem....)
