SIM and NT4 Server Agents

Are there any issues with getting SIM 4.2 to work with a managed server running NT4 O.S. and version 6.0 of management agents?

It doesnt look like HP has done much with management agents for NT O.S...

Re: SIM and NT4 Server Agents

HP SIM has no knowledge of the underlying OS. There should be no issues with a properly configured current set of agents for NT4.

Please keep in mind that MS no longer supports NT4 as of 12/31/2004. No new functionality is being developed for NT4, but use of existing functionality is still supported.

Can you be more specific with problems you are having.

Re: SIM and NT4 Server Agents

well okay here goes:

If I log in locally to the NT server running 6.0 foundation agents, and go to localhost:2301, I can log in via Administrator with no issues.

However, when I add the server into SIM via discovery, and try to open any of the management software links, it reports the Administrator password is invalid when I try to log in.

This is the same admin password that I used when I logged into the management page after logging in locally to the machine. This is happening on ALL of my NT servers running 6.0 agents, and not happening on everything else.

I verified that the trust is set up properly, and so is snmp... but HP SIM wont even take a test trap from the nt server...

any ideas?

Could your SIM be setup to not accept traps from the specific IP addresses?

Re: SIM and NT4 Server Agents

nope. no filters set at all.

And I have ruled out a network issue, as there is a 2k3 server running 7.1 SIM agents on the same vlan as the nt servers, and it is having no issues.

Re: SIM and NT4 Server Agents

Double check your SNMP Service Properties to 'Accept SNMP packets from any host'. I noticed v4.1 or v4.2 doesn't accept SNMP Trap messages when this setting is set to 'Accept sNMP packets from these hosts'.

"However, when I add the server into SIM via discovery, and try to open any of the management software links, it reports the Administrator password is invalid when I try to log in."

Thinkgs to check into: browser proxy exceptions need to exclude those servers; any chance there is an underscore in their host names--a definite no-no

"I verified that the trust is set up properly, and so is snmp..."
What you describe above is completely un-related to trust and SNMP.

"...but HP SIM wont even take a test trap from the nt server..."

Confirm that the agent fired by looking at the Windows event log. Any firewalls or anything else that could be interfering? There are 2 recent threads on this forums where the resolution had to do with McAfee configuration.

Re: SIM and NT4 Server Agents

actually,

the servers DO have underscores in their name. Is there any way around this?

They also do have McAfee viruscan and epolicy agents... can you direct me to some solutions for reconfiguration?

Thanks a bunch.

Re: SIM and NT4 Server Agents

an additional note:

the snmp test trap records in the server's event viewer on the nt box

Re: SIM and NT4 Server Agents

ok i fixed the login problem by changing the link configuration in SIM to use IP instead of name (the underscore issue).

However, I still cant get traps from the NT machine. And SNMP is set up properly. Cant seem to find the mcafee issue on the boards...

Here's one of the McAfee threads: http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=787226

Underscores are a definite no-no in DNS names. See the MS KB article at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316112
