SIM Problems: Device Names, Clusters, VCRepository.

So far I'm really liking the new SIM, but I am having a few issues that maybe someone can help me with.

Device Names: Some of my server devices are not showing up with the name. They show up with the IP Address in the "System Name" column. I have been unable to find a place to manually change this information. The devices are communicating properly and I am obtaining a full inventory of data in the "Data Collection Report" In CIM7 you could manually change a device name, but I can't seem to find it.

Clusters: Well I have two Cluster's and so far it seems that SIM is unable to see either of them. Insight 5.5 and CIM7 both see the cluster's properly. I see the Cluster Devices and the Virtual Devices in my list. Maybe I'm missing something. The clusters are both MSCS.

VCRepository (The one that comes with SIM): It seems that the repository is not recognizing the new PSP 7.0 for Windows 2003 or Windows 2000 as a "Software Baseline". I was going to manually create the baseline, however Windows 2003 is not an option under the Create a baseline menu. The Packs only show up on the home page listing in the Repository. Also I can deploy them using the VCAgent on a device, but since its not a Baseline I can't deploy it using SIM to multiple devices.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hello and Merry X-mas

problem1: Check your dns settings on the SIM server. At the command prompt, make sure you can successfully lookup the reverse address in otherwords, do a ping -a 10.3.5.56 and see if it returns the FQDN name. If it doesn't then your dns server server is not configured properly to do reverse lookups.

Problem2: It seems to me by far SIM does a much better job of identifying clusters then any other version of IM. Make sure you have properly setup the default control community string on the SIM server and also make sure that that community string is the same one used on the clients.

Problem3: I've had no such problem. Did you download and extract PSP 7.0 in repository directory? Make sure you do that. As an alternative, configure VCRM to do an automatic download or update. schedule it to happen sooner. It will pull both win2k3 and win2k PSPs.

Re: SIM Problems: Device Names, Clusters, VCRepository.

Thanks very much for the reply. Merry Christmas to you as well.

You hit the nail on the head, it is DNS problems. We have mutiple site's DNS servers and they don't all share together. I'm going to probably end up making some secondary zones. The Cluster problems are also related to the DNS problems, so they should all be fixed once that is set.

The VCRepository problem is very strange. I set it up originally to automatically download the Support Packs, which it did. I have about 12 packs in my listing. 7.0, 6.4, 6.3, 6.2 are all there; even the unneeded Japanese ones. Unfortunately it didn't give me the BaseLine's for the 7.0 Support Packs. I think there is a way to make the database rebuild itself if I delete one of the XML files in the Repository root. I have tried manually uploading the PSP 7.0, it uploads fine, but still no baseline. I'll keep playing, thanks again!

No problem.

Yes I agree, I would just rebuild the VCRM database and see what happens.

You should not need to "trick" VCRM into rebuilding the database by deleting a file. It is an explicit option on the Catalog Tab of VCRM Web Server.

However, FWIW, I have once had to restart the VCRM service after rebuilding the DB before all the PSPs would actually show up in the catalog. But this should be rare, and occurred when I absentmindedly reloaded all the PSPs VCRM "knew about" from CDs, overwriting every single file in the monitored directory.
