Suspending monitoring on critical server generates "reachable" event

Hi all,

Well, the title pretty much says it all, but I shut down three servers and, since they are going to be down for a while, I suspended monitoring on them after they had already been marked critical. For each, a "system is reachable" event was generated. That seems illogical to me and I'm wondering if it's a bug!

Thanks,
- Steve

Re: Suspending monitoring on critical server generates "reachable" event

Do you mean that the "system is reachable" event was generated once monitoring was resumed and the servers were up an running? That would be a logical conclusion. After all, the servers were not pingable and now the can be pinged again (reachable).

However, if the systems were still down when you resumed monitoring, I would consider it a bug if the "system is reachable" event was generated. A "system is reachable" event would be expected once a system was brought back again.

The "system is reachable" and "system is unreachable" events are generated by Insight Manager itself, not the managed computers. That is probably what makes it a little counterintuitive.

Neither. The event was generated upon suspending monitoring of the critical systems.

I was not able to reproduce this symptom with hp Systems Insight Manager 4.2.

Re: Suspending monitoring on critical server generates "reachable" event

Just to be very clear, here's what happened:

- I shut down and powered off three servers.
- SIM marked the servers as "critical" and generated three "system is unreachable" events.
- For each server, I went to the system page within SIM, and used the "Suspend/Resume Monitoring" link.
- I chose "Suspend monitoring of this system indefinitely" and clicked OK.
- As soon as I did this, SIM generated a "system is reachable" event for each of the servers.

Thanks,
- Steve

Never mind, I reproduced it. Looks like a logic bug to me.

Hi Jon,

I'm glad to see that you have reproduced it. Are you affiliated with HP?

Thanks,

Yes, but unfortunately, there is no resolution at this time. I have reported it to an equivalent of an improvement suggestion box for the product.

That's good. I'm glad to know it is in the proper channels.

Re: Suspending monitoring on critical server generates "reachable" event

Hi,

I reopened this thread to say that, when I reenabled monitoring on the servers, SIM immediately generated "Server unreachable" events for them (before actually checking the state of the servers and changing them to reachable).

Thanks,
- Steve
