The HP Remote Support Client service dies with Windows error 1053

We have had SIM (6.3 on Windows 2008 64b) running for quite a while now, but a week ago one of the HP-SIM services cannot be restarted. A windows "start service" ends with an error 1053 (no response in a timely fashion). I am halfway in upgrading to SIM 7.1 but still a few weeks from going live.

I have tried a reboot (several) and a cleanup of all related directories.

 

Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated.
