Timeouts on most system Management Home Pages

All of a sudden I am getting timeout messages on most of my W2K and W2K3 home pages. The page actually loads correctly, but it's the 'HP Version Control Agent' that won't work. If I click on the link, it tries to connect for 15 minutes then times out with an "Internal Server Error". On one server it generates a message saying "The current login account does not have sufficient rights to access or view Version Control Agent Data".

This is ludicrous because it all worked this morning and nothing has changed on these servers. I checked the VC Agent this morning and it was all fine. All version data was displayed correctly. The only server that has been subsequently changed is my Insight Management Console, which did exhibit the same problem until I re-installed PSP 7.60 and rebooted. It did however get stuck on installing the VC agent and bombed out but a reboot has fixed the problem.

Is the problem on my Insight Management Console? SNMP settings are correct and VC repository configured correctly so I can't see what the problem is.

If I try and re-install just the VC agent on my failng servers it just sits there trying to install it but nothing happens.

Thanks

Lenny

Re: Timeouts on most system Management Home Pages

I have this same exact problem:

A data collection job (software or hardware) runs from the SIM server. It blows up half way through (you might see an error message on the console of the SIM server). When it fails, it leaves a bunch of managed nodes in a hung state. Basically, the VCAgent service on the managed node is hung up which then causes problems for the Web Agent and gives the time out error. The only way I found to fix this is this:

1) On each node with the problem, you must kill the VCAgent service. You cannot manually stop it. On Win2003, use Taskkill.exe. On Win2K, use Kill.exe.
2) Once the VCAgent is stopped, restart all the Management agents by restarting the SNMP service (it will automatically restart all the HP agents).
3) Manually restart the HP Web Agent
4) Wait about 10 seconds for it to load
5) Manually start the VCAgent service
6) Try the web interface and see if it fixes the timeout error.

To prevent this, I stopped all automatic data collection jobs. Both software and hardware.

Yes - I know. This is a major pain in the butt and defeats the purpose of having SIM do data collection. It's a free product :)

Thanks for your reply. Yes it appears that if I End Task the remote control agent, or if that doesn't work Kill it and run it again, I then have access to the required data.

Even worked on the server that generated the error "The current login account does not have sufficient rights....."

Seems to be OK now.
