trying to discover an HP7102 router...?

I entered in the IP address of my router and did a discovery. It found it, however the System Type shows up as "Unknown" and Product Name is blank.

On my router, I have SNMP configured as follows:

snmp-server contact phone "xxx-xxx-xxxx"
snmp-server location "xxx"
snmp-server chassis-id "xxx-xxx-r1"
snmp-server enable traps snmp
snmp-server community hpsim1 RO
snmp-server host 172.25.8.24 traps version 2c version

Am I missing something in order for SIM 5.1 w/Sp1 to see this router properly?

I'm new to this software so apologies is this is something simple. I do have a couple of HP switches (5304s and 4000s) showing up properly in the list so far. Just this router giving me trouble at the moment.

Kinda wondering if SIM doesn't see the HP 7102s properly. ?

Re: trying to discover an HP7102 router...?

I noticed the HP 7102/7203 router is NOT listed in "Options|Managed System Types".

Nor is the HP 2608-PWR switch I am trying to add to SIM.

If these are not listed, can they be added somehow? These routers/switches have been out for over a YEAR now. Why is SIM not supporting them?

Re: trying to discover an HP7102 router...?

Adding the 7102 router and 2608-PWR switch to Managed System Types might have been easier than I thought. I merely clicked NEW, then retrieved its System Object Identified and set it up as a Router (for the 7102), and as a Switch (for the 2608-PWR).

Now when I rediscover them, they show up with the proper System Type and Product Name.

Is this what I should have done? Or did I do this wrong? Thanks! (this is all new to me)

Re: trying to discover an HP7102 router...?

That's certainly the way to add devices that HPSIM is not able to identify.

The steps you've gone through are pretty much the way that you do.
First make sure you have SNMP configured on the device and run the Identification task.
If it doesn't identify itself then I sometimes use the Add part of Managed System Devices to check that SNMP is getting to the device. If it is but it's not being identified then I can add it.

The version of HPSIM is useful to know. Also, make sure the latest MIBs are loaded into HPSIM they're available for download - start at:

Re: trying to discover an HP7102 router...?

I guess I'm not sure how I determine whether or not I need to download MIBs for these devices? (HP Procurve 4000, 5304, 2608PWR, 5308, 2626PWR, etc.).

I went to the link you sent me but it was specifically for servers. (I'll keep that link handy for when I do setup my servers in SIM).

Anyways, if you could let me know how I determine whether I need to d/l MIBs or not, that'd be great.

Re: trying to discover an HP7102 router...?

There's a MIB Update for HPSIM itself, select the OS that HPSIM is installed on and you should find it. e.g. drilling down thru' Windows there's a MIB Update kist and the link is:
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/27369.html

Other MIB's can be compiled into HPSIM, typically they're for when those devices send SNMP Traps to HPSIM. HPSIM can interpret the trap.

You can find MIBs for other devices at a few sites - just try Google.

Re: trying to discover an HP7102 router...?

I looked at the MIB update you mentioned, however, it seems specific to servers, not to any switches.

If a device requires a MIB such as cisco-cdp.mib, should I use the cisco-cdp.mib that comes with the device, or should I use the one that's already installed with HPSIM? I noticed this on a couple of MIBs including some RFC mibs which are already in HPSIM, but were also included with the MIB download for the device.

Any idea which one I should use, or doesn't it really matter?

Re: trying to discover an HP7102 router...?

Many MIBs downloaded from the wild and wooly internet can be fraught with errors, even as simple as spelling mistakes. Always try to default to what comes with HP SIM if available so that won't have the headache of trying to debug.
