Two notification email tasks - only one fires

Hi all,

I am having a problem with the automatic event handling in SIM. I have two tasks defined - one triggers for any Minor, Major, or Critical event. The second triggers for any "System is unreachable" event. Both are defined with the same system set - all systems except system type "unmanaged" or "printer" (who wants an email every time a printer gets turned off)?

The problem is that when a "System is unreachable" event is generated, both tasks are not always firing. Sometimes it's one, sometimes the other, sometimes both.

Has anyone else seen this type of behavior? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
- Steve

Yes I've seen this before and this is what I found out. check your pre defined systems list. it may not include the newer deives that were added or the devices may have not made it to the system list. Go deep into the event query and make sure the devices that you are suppose to get alerted for are part of that list.

Re: Two notification email tasks - only one fires

Hi Jadice,

Thanks - this certainly seems like a likely cause since, as I said in another post, one of my non-server devices did not get added to the "Non Server Status Polling List" when it was discovered. However, I'm not sure how to fix the problem - on the "Select Systems" step for the notification task, I have defined "System Type is not Printer" and "System Type is not Unmanaged." How do I see what systems it is actually checking these rules against?

Thanks,

"Go deep into the event query and make sure the devices that you are suppose to get alerted for are part of that list."

Can anyone tell me how to do accomplish this? SIM does not have readily-accessible queries in the same way that IM7 did.

Thanks,

Re: Two notification email tasks - only one fires

The Server Status Polling List and the Non Server Status Polling List can both be found in the Systems Lists column normally located at the left of the Systems Insight Console Screen.

Expand Systsme Lists and then System Functions to see them.

If you want to Customise them then click the Customize button and scroll down to the relevant list- then use the Edit Lists button.

Note that these lists seem to default to System Types rather than System Names.

Re: Two notification email tasks - only one fires

Thanks, Colin, but this wasn't exactly what I meant. Jadice had suggested that I examine the queries which are being used by my Automatic Event Handling Tasks, and I can't see how to do this. (I see that I can access the queries in Scheduled Tasks, but not Automatic Event Handling.)

Also, when looking at System Lists, the "Customize" button only lets you customize the display, not the content.

The automatic event ones can be found by selecting Options, Events, Automatic Event Handling, Manage Tasks from the menu bar of the main window

Yes, I know. But it is not possible from that part of the interface to view which queries are associated with the event-handling tasts.

Re: Two notification email tasks - only one fires

I though the event handling tasks used their own lists i.e. if you click on Edit and run through the little wizard thing it lets you specify both the Event Assignee, Status or Category(i.e. Critical, Major, Unreachable etc) and the System Names - I suppose that if you are using the Any option in System Names it then depends on on some hidden System List.

Note I have had problems getting the automatic events to work myself as it seems to be a bit hit and miss. I therefore have another message posted on this forum.
