VMWare ESX, serial number and Asset Tag not displayed
Hi All,
If I go to the Server Info part of the Home Page for our VMWare ESX 2.5 Server I see both the Asset Tag and Serial Number as expected.
But, on the System Page reached by clicking on the Server name or running a report, neither the Asset Tag nor the Serial number is displayed.
7.20 of the HP VMWare Agents.
Will this be addressed soon?

Re: VMWare ESX, serial number and Asset Tag not displayed
Rob,
I believe this is a SSH communication issue between the VMware ESX server and the CMS (SIM.) I had the exact issue with both of my ESX servers. I have resolved it on one of my machines.
I have ran the mxagentconfig against both nodes from the SIM server. However, I did not get that information to populate in SIM until I ran an ssh-keyscan on the ESX server against the SIM server to import SIM's public key into the /root/.ssh/authorized_keys2. This same step has not yeilded the same results on the other ESX server, though.
Being new to OpenSSH, I have had difficulty with wrapping my head around how to configure it let alone how HP has implemented it in SIM (and yes, I've read HP's whitepapers/manuals.) Any additional insight here is definitely appreciated.

Re: VMWare ESX, serial number and Asset Tag not displayed
Derek, the collection of information Rob refers to is done by SNMP from the System Management Homepage and NOT via SSH.
Rob, can you SNMPWALK the box from your CMS?

Re: VMWare ESX, serial number and Asset Tag not displayed
David,
Yes I can SNMPWalk the device, but we do not use the default community name.
The page gets populated with some default information.
It seems it may not like the fact there are two Read Only Community names, we have the default plus one of our own. I'm trying to get rid of the default. "public" was listed first in the Global Settings.
SNMPWalk using public does return some basic information from the Server, even though I don't have that community name in the conf file.
I've changed the order and now the Serial Number does appear after running discovery. The Asset Tag doesn't but I'll rerun the Bi-Weekly task later.
There is still a problem on ESX 2.5 where the Sub-Type is not being set. You need to manually set this to VMWare Host otherwise you don't see the license option in HPSIM.
But again, this may go back to the fact the Identification seemed to get some details from trying public and therefore did not try the actual Read Only identifier.
