WBEM monitoring of ESXi 5.1U1

I am looking for some help troubleshooting some problems I am having setting up some ESXi hosts to show their critical events in SIM.

I have, on all systems, set up the root password and it shows in the options>security>credentials>system credentials "Credentials that are in use section" as WBEM/WMI Port 5989 and Sign-in.

All ESXi hosts are licensed.

All are registered in Configure>Virtual Machine>Register Virtual Machine Host...

All have been discovered

All are running the HP ESXi

All are DL380 G7 machines

I have additionally setup Insight Control for vSphere

I do get iLO alerts (in duplicate) when a machine is rebooted but alerts such as power supply not redundant never show up.

Additionally here is the result of a discovery on one of the hosts.

********* Significant issues and overall target discovery/identification
          status:
Normal: The system has valid hardware data (model, serial number, and
unique identifier) and has been identified properly for SIM to
          manage.

Normal: The system does not support SNMP.
        * Running SNMP base cluster identification using common cluster
          MIB...

Re: WBEM monitoring of ESXi 5.1U1

Did you subscribe to WBEM events for this host?

Options - Events - Subscribe to WBEM Events i believe...

Re: WBEM monitoring of ESXi 5.1U1

Yeah I did.  Something that may be related:

I had the VMware ESXi 5.1 Update 1 installed but then installed the HP ESXi 5.1 Update 1 as an upgrade.  It broadened the Hardware Status reporting in vCenter so everything seemed ok.  I noticed some talk about partial subscriptions if you ran a discovery before installing the offline bundle.  When I run my subscription though, I don't see any errors it just says subscribed successfully (or something similar).

Re: WBEM monitoring of ESXi 5.1U1

Thanks for the tip.  I have recently updated some of our ESXi 4.1 environments to update 3 + patches (also using offline bundle and VUM), so  I wonder if I need to re-subscribe as well.  Unfortunately there isn't a way to test traps in ESXi that I am aware of.  I will ask the guy that's been helping us with our SIM implementation (from HP).

Thanks!

Re: WBEM monitoring of ESXi 5.1U1

Might be a good idea to get SNMP working as well. I have 2 ESXi 5 hosts and they seem to be working fine.

Use this KB article from VMware and see how you go:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1008065

Make sure you have the latest MIB's and hotfixes for HP SIM as I did have some issues with generic traps before I updated the MIB's to the latest.

Cheers!

Re: WBEM monitoring of ESXi 5.1U1

We do use/configure net-snmp on the ESXi hosts, but my understanding is that the events would not come over through SNMP and it generally "is not used".  This is from our HP contact, but I will ask again for clarification.

Thanks for the link, i will review it.
