Why I can not directly see a server information by clicking the status button under "HW"
May someone can help me on the below case:
I have Insight Manager installed in my network but all Compaq servers in another network, which is connected to our network via VPN, can not be access by just clicking the status button under "HW" column in Insight Manager. For example, for any server in my network, if I click the status button of a HP server in the home page of Insight Manger, it will automatically lunch a page (http://172.21.0.11:2301/WEBAGENT/FINDEX.TPL) and I can see the detail of that server. But for all servers in another network which is connected via VPN, this would not work. I have checked the VPN/FW setting, it seems everything is fine.
And also, if I, in IE, directly type the address of a server webagent in the VPN connected Network( like http://172.19.0.12:2301/WEBAGENT/FINDEX.TPL), I can access it.
Any one know something?? Thanks in advance
Best Regards

No error message happen. My problem is that when I try to click the status button under the "HW" column, it will not automaticlly lunch the http://172.19.0.12:2301... and show me the detail informaton of that sever, but will go to the page which shows up when clicking the device name.

Re: Why I can not directly see a server information by clicking the status button under "HW"
Can you double check the device link configuration in IM7. To do this, go to Settings -> Security -> Device Links. select the radio button "Use device IP Address".
If that is configured correctly, Check the control snmp settings on the remote servers and make sure it matches the default control snmp settings on the IM7 server. then re run the daily device identification polling task.
Let me know if that helps.

Re: Why I can not directly see a server information by clicking the status button under "HW"
For any Servers that have the Agents on them, but are appearing as "Unknown" or "Unmanaged" then you have a Discovery issue.
SNMP on its own can identify a device, "Unmanaged" would indicate it SNMP is either not active on the target server or access is disallowed. Are these W2003 Servers? SNMP security was tightened up, check that the CMS host is allowed access.
If it's "Unknown" then that indicates SNMP is actoive, but either the identification task has not run, or it cannot identify the hardware. I wouldn't expect to see this with a Proliant.
Once you've got the SNMP issue sorted out the rest may fall into place.

Re: Why I can not directly see a server information by clicking the status button under "HW"
Many thanks for your help but please allow me answer your questions one by one:
1. For the device Link, before I posted this and double checked just now and confirm I set "Use the Device IP Address" as the default setting.
2. For the SNMP security settings, I have checked servers in the VPN connected site. The settings are all "access snmp packages from any host" and the community strings are "public" for the insight manager server and all managed servers.
3. The HW status is in "green" color for those "problem" servers and this means that SNMP is active and already idenify the status of those servers but the product name is not shown up.
4. All our servers are Proliant servers from Compaq.
Hope I have expressed it very clear so I will get some clues for solving this problem.

Re: Why I can not directly see a server information by clicking the status button under "HW"
Two more things to my further:
1. for one of the above points regarding the "community string", I mean both of the Insight manager itself or the server running the insight manager or the "problem" servers in the VPN connected site is the same: public
2.All those servers are either running Win2K or WinNT.
Thanks

Re: Why I can not directly see a server information by clicking the status button under "HW"
I am actually having the same problem. Here is the rundown of what I've been experiencing:
I've installed HP Insight Manager and everything for the most part works perfectly. We have two seperate networks, the inside, and the DMZ. The HP SIM machine sits on the inside network. I've opened up the ports 161 (SNMP), 2301, and 2381 going both ways from the dmz to the inside network and vice versa.
When I add a system to Insight Manager from the DMZ it finds the server just fine. The problem is, when I click on the status button under HW, for ANY of the machines in the DMZ, it brings me to a general information page within HP SIM. For all the other machines (the ones on the internal network), it'll bring me to: https://servername:2381
Does anyone know why this is happening? I've configured SNMP correctly and opened the ports I mentioned previously. Is there some other port that HP SIM needs open in order to function properly?

Re: Why I can not directly see a server information by clicking the status button under "HW"
We have solved the problem that I posted here by doing below:
1. Beside you open the 161/162/2301/2381 port in your F/W, please make sure that the ICMP port is open between them also.
2. Do not try to add the devices manually but use the automatic discovery service. If the ICMP port is not open between the two networks, when you use the "automatic discovery" service, you will not be able to find the servers in another VPN connected Network because: when doing the automatic discovery, the Insight Manager will try to ping those IP and if there is no response from those IP, it will assume that there is no device for the pinged IP. Of course, the SNMP communication will not also be continued for that IP.
3. If you try to use the "maunal discovery" method to find those servers which can not be pinged, you can find those servers but you may have the problem as we have here since I think, because there is a bug with the Insight Manager, the information returned from those servers are not completely.
Hope the above can help someone who has the same problem as us. In general, do not use the manual discovery method but use the "automatic discovery" method.
