Win2k, Foundation Agents error in event log

Win2k, Foundation Agents error in event log

(I posted this to the Proliant forum, and it got moved to the Windows 2000 forum where it got no reply. Since this is a Foundation Agents error, I'm assuming it's not a Microsoft problem.)

We have a DL360 G2 running Win2k, Sp4, Support Pack 7.10 A. It's running a .NET web app (AccPac) that is having a lot of problems. When the users report problems, we see a lot of this in the System log.

[7781] Foundation Agents
Type: WARNING
Computer: NI4-SRVR
Time: 7/7/2004 4:42:45 PM ID: 4402
The External Status MIB Agent could not create an SNMP
session. The data contains the error code.

Any ideas?

Do you use Insight Manager? or do you have some kind of Management Server.

This is a bit of a guess, but the HP Foundation Agent will try and send an SNMP Trap to a Management Server. Possibly SNMP has been configured on the Server but the Trap Destination is invalid?

Good point Rob. I would check the SNMP settings on the box to make sure that at least one community string is specified, a trap destination is set for sending alerts, and that you have enabled an IP (or all) to accept SNMP packets from (especially if running Win2k3 systems).

Has the SNMP Trap Service been set to Manual? (=Default)
It can't work if it is set to Disabled obviously, but I have also had problems when the SNMP Trap service was set to Automatic.

Re: Win2k, Foundation Agents error in event log

Hm. No, there was no trap destination. SNMP was configured with a RO and a RW string, I do use HPSIM 4.1 - this was the only server (we have 7) that threw this error. I set a trap destination, sent a test trap, and confirmed that the HPSIM system had received it. I'll wait a couple of days to see if the error pops up again, and assign points if it doesn't.

Thanks

Re: Win2k, Foundation Agents error in event log

That wasn't it - I'm still getting that Foundation Agents warning.

Again, any ideas?

Re: Win2k, Foundation Agents error in event log

Never seen this particular error before; does the web app (ACCPAC) utilize SNMP somehow? Maybe the web app is corrupting SNMP somehow (or the connection stream).

I think this is an external 'force' occuring here that is not part of the agents else we would see this more pervasive.

Re: Win2k, Foundation Agents error in event log

The web app itself does not use SNMP - it's an accounting application. However it uses .NET remoting, do the foundation agents try to get perfmon data into SNMP out of the box?

that's very possible, not quite sure.

Re: Win2k, Foundation Agents error in event log

I called support, they claim that 7.1 External Status MIB Agent has a bug, to be fixed in the next rev.
