Windows install - Is Active dir. necessity?

I hope someone can help here, i'd like to install SIM on a Windows box and use another server to host database. I have SQL up and running on the other server, but installation just fails, says it can't find the server. the question is, do you need to have the servers in a domain? they're just standalone server at the moment, i am not a windows head, so i don't like to mess with ad and stuff. just want to get sim working on windows. Didn't like the linux version, seems a bit flaky.

Help appreciated!

My question is why do you want to use SIM. Or why would you like to use it if you don't have a domain or large amount of workstations?

we have about 70 proliant servers, some of them run windows and linux, most of them run novell. i want to use sim to monitor the hardware healt and also like to use pmp of the handful of windows boxes we have. also like the version control feature (i know i don't need sim for that) but it is nicely integrated.

i had it running on linux but i had some problem with snmp configuration, and pmp isn;t supported. :-(

Do you have dns etc set up correctly? Does it work when you install sim using the local database option?

i works with a local database, that is not a problem. i think i will have to use this option. :-( DNS is configured and working, on a unix box.

Hmm strange if DNS is setup correctly, SIM should be able to find the sql server. Try and see if you can setup ODBC and test the connection to your SQL server. If this works you could import the local database into SQL and change the ODBC settings to point to your SQL server.

that sounds like a plan! i can setup odbc connection, that works. but can't do the install of remote database, cause the domain field is grayed out with the server name. so i gather it has to be in the same domain, what a nuisance!

i will do a local install and try to import the database later, it's just i haven't worked with databases before so i didnt know this was an option, cheers!
