Booting a Proliant 3000

I'm having difficulty getting a Proliant 3000 to boot.
It's a dual P3 600 with 6 disks and 1gb ram.
Now the disk array was rather fubared when I got it I had to remove one of original drives and added 4 more.
Unfortunatly the partition that held the configuration editor and such is gone too,
I'd like to boot from the startsmart cd but I can't get the server to boot off anything
other than the busted disk array.
I tried f10 (and all the other keys on the board) but I can't get into any form of menu, not bios, not scsi config, nothing.

Can anybody tell me what magic key to press?

Re: Booting a Proliant 3000

Progress update:
managed to bott from the earase utility disk and it tells me my system has been intentionally locked and I need to do a power cycle to change the settings,
then i remove the floppy and insert the smart start cd, then i button it down and up again,
it greets me with a choice of operating systems I'm going to be running and I choose win 2000, then i have to boot again
and lo and behold, back to squre one as the erasee utility still gives the same error and I still can't boot to the smart start cd (I'm sure I'm doing something silly here)

Re: Booting a Proliant 3000

I've got around this in the past by booting the system with no disks in it and performing a sys-erase on the box (still with no disks). Power the system off, insert the drives again with the SmartStart CD in the CD-ROM drive and away it went. (The 3000's I think require 5.40 for the initial setup but don't quote me on that.)

That was on a 6000 but it was experiencing the same issues you are describing.

Re: Booting a Proliant 3000

Hi Flynn,
Thanks for the reply!

Didn't work though,
When I run the erease tool from floppy
I get an error saying my system was intentionally locked and that I have to powercycle to change the system settings.
And when I power cycle it does give me some options about wich operating system I'll be running but then it boots again and I'm back where I started with the erease utility stating my system is intentionally locked.

Is there some jumper i can switch to unlock/reset it?

You should have settings on a sticker pasted on the top or side cover. Look for a switch which might have five to eight settings. One of these invokes password and disables it. I use to have two of them and they are excellent servers.
SmartStart 4.7 through 5.5 will work.

Try to reset the bios switch on the server mainboard (it can be just a jumper or maybe a DIPswitch, check the mainboard documentation)Then power up the server. then you must be able to enter the bios and set first boot device to CDROm.

Re: Booting a Proliant 3000

Thanks for the replies guys!

I found the sticker and the dipswitches but something is weird.
According to the sticker (and the manual) I'm supposed to have 6 switches, yet I have 8 of them.
I tried allmost all of them but none of them seem to do what the manual said they would, So I'm starting to think the amount of switches don't correspond to their said funtions,
Does anyone have the list of functions for the mainboard with 8 switches?

Re: Booting a Proliant 3000

I think the 8 DIP switch bank on the motherboard are for the Processor settings. The configuration switch should be another bank on the board.

Re: Booting a Proliant 3000

Yeah.. from the looks of it, the 8 DIP switch bank is to set the Processor speeds on 300 and 333Mhz Processors. The newer boards/processors use a 6 DIP switch bank.

Re: Booting a Proliant 3000

Thanks for the reply flynn, and sorry for my tardiness in replying to my own post (it's been a madhouse here)
But the werd thing about that s that there are two pIII 600 cpu's on the board that work and have always worked.
Can't be the right board can it?

Re: Booting a Proliant 3000

triconnect - I'm having the same problem running the erase utility. Did you ever figure out what to do?

I also have 8 switches, but the board says "system configuration" by them so I know they have to be the right ones.
