Hi All,
I have a MontaVista Linux distro running on a DL360 Gen 9 server, and I was wondering if flashing the newest System ROM would impact the OS at all, aside from maintenence outages.
The current version is 2.56_01-22-2018, I would like to flash the 3.08_01-12-2023 version.
Software Details - System ROM Flash Binary - HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9/DL360 Gen9 (P89) | HPE Support
Many Thanks,
JMBT

Re: Does flashing a System ROM Binaries affect the underlying OS?
The system ROM, also known as the firmware, is responsible for providing low-level hardware control and initialization during the boot process. It contains a set of software instructions that enable the computer to communicate with its hardware components, such as the motherboard, CPU, and storage devices.

Re: Does flashing a System ROM Binaries affect the underlying OS?
Thanks for your help. As I understand, flashing the firmware / ROM may require a driver change at the OS level. Is that correct? Or is there an interface where the OS is unaware of the underlying instruction changes?

Re: Does flashing a System ROM Binaries affect the underlying OS?
Hello,
Generally, updating the server's BIOS does not affect the operating system environment. In this instance, however, the update includes the revision of the Intel IPU 2023.1 BIOS update which provides Intel's mitigation for BIOS advisory and security vulnerabilities documented as CVE-2022-26343. This security vulnerability is documented in the CVE report site, and is not an issue unique to HPE servers though. Hence, please consult the documentation of the operating system regarding the vulnerability CVE-2022-26343.

SolutionHello
Basically the BIOS update will not affect the Operating system.
Upon reviewing the installed BIOS version, it is too old. We would suggest you to upgrade the BIOS in incremental way and achieve to the latest version.
Cheers...
