On a relatively new HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9 server, the Smart Storage Battery failed (5 months after the warranty expired. Grrr!) I have now purchased and installed three replacement batteries, the last one from Amazon Renewed. All batteries immediately report failure when the server is powered up. I've updated iLO firmware, but cannot update the SmartArray P440ar firmware. This is a VMware environment and when I execute CP039996.vmexe in Tech Support Mode, I get error "generated scexe is not same as original scexe". I also tried the prior version firmware and got the same error. Any ideas on how to get the firmware installed? Any other troubleshooting steps to determine why none of the batteries are working? iLO shows that the battery is present, but failed. I've waited more than 24 hours on each server to see if the battery would charge and then work properly. Thank you for your help.

SolutionFor the firmware you could try
https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=MTX_69c577a5de814a8ea6db8fcea1
The battery should be a 878643-001 (the blue battery).
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9 Smart Storage Battery Failed
Thank you. I'm downloading it now. I see that this is a Gen10 SPP. Is that still applicable to my Gen9 server? Also, the batteries I have are green. The original one says "Replace with 750450-001" and one of the replacements I tried says "Replace with 815983-001".

Re: HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9 Smart Storage Battery Failed
If you have a support contract, you can use
https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=MTX_62207605d23140ec82dfb56d11
If not, use the above (Gen10).
It is identical, but the Gen10 has no Gen9 BIOS updates.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9 Smart Storage Battery Failed
Thank you. iLO reports the battery Model as 727258-B21, so that is the part I ordered from the three different vendors. The picture in the link you provided seems to match the parts I have in hand. Let's hope the firmware update does the trick

Re: HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9 Smart Storage Battery Failed
Thank you for your help in updating the firmware on the Smart Array controller. The SPP successfully updated the firmware; however, unfortunately, the problem remains where the Smart Storage battery is coming up as failed during each boot sequence. Any ideas on how to proceed from here?

Unfortunately, updating the SPP for Proliant G9 did not help. Any more ideas?

Re: HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9 Smart Storage Battery Failed
We ended up contacting a post-warranty provider, Park Place Technologies. They replaced the motherboard, Smart Array card, and Smart Array battery. After they left, I tested the old Smart Array card and it worked fine. So, I returned the new one to them for partial credit. In the end, I suspect it may have just been incorrect batteries each time, since the battery they installed was blue in color, and all the other ones I purchased, despite having the correct part number, were green in color.

Re: HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9 Smart Storage Battery Failed
>> From the user manual, I learned that if the indicator on the power supply is constantly green (the indicator is located on the power supply, i.e. on the back of the server), then this means that the replaced battery is fully charged
This is not true.
Green LED on the power supply means the power supply is working.
By the way, older battery models are green, newer revision is blue.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Yes you are right!
I was wrong, I came across the description of the FSBBU module.
