Recovering firmware for HP H222 SAS controller (LSI 9217-4i4e) - is my card bricked ?
Moderator - I'm not really sure which sub-forum to post this in, please feel free to move to the right one.
I have an HPE H222 PCIe 3.0 x8 SAS controller. The chip is made by Symbios Logic/LSI/Avago/Broadcom . The label on the card says it's a 9217-4i4e.
I messed up the firmware update, and at this time, neither Linux or Windows are able to see the card at all, so I can't use those operating systems to flash it. The only options for flashing appear to be to boot from USB stick, and run either FreeDOS and run mega.rec.exe, or boot UEFI shell and run sas2flash.efi
I have been banging my head against the wall for 3 days trying to flash the correct firmware back into the card, to no avail. There is a long discussion at https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/help-with-hp-9207-4i4e-needed-firmware-update-problem-lsi-sas2308.34666/ with a lot more details.
The main error I get is "ERROR: Fimware Host Boot Failed !" when running sas2flash.efi, no matter which version of the firmware I tried to flash.
Under DOS, megarec.exe returns various warnings and errors.
I have tried to flash the recovery ROM 2208_16.rom using megarec.exe under DOS, and it fails to flash onto the card.
Is there any way to recover my controller, or is it bricked for good ?

Thanks, but this is not helpful. I am not using a SAS expander.
I am using a SAS controller. It's a 6Gb/s model. The model is H222.
One label has
SP # 725904-001 .
DG# 725504 .
Another label has
SAS9217-4i4e
