MC ServiceGuard and ESS (Shark)

Is there any documentation concerning the support of this combination. I've seen a lot of messages being answered but is there any documentation that anyone can send me from either HP or IBM stating that this configuration is supported or not.

Re: MC ServiceGuard and ESS (Shark)

Hi Melvyn,

I believe ESS shark is the storage system from IBM.

Hi Denita,

I don't think you can find any documentation over here. Your best bet would be to work with your suppliers on setting up the ESS shark thing on Service Guard. For any service guard issue, you can talk to HP, if you have HP support for that. They have a team dedicated to Support Service Guard issues only (Am i right Melvyn ?). I was very pleased with their support once when i needed it.

Hope this helps.

thanks

Re: MC ServiceGuard and ESS (Shark)

It is the storage for IBM equivalent to the EMC Symmetrix boxes. The model for this disk subsystem is 2105. Used for Enterprise storage

Re: MC ServiceGuard and ESS (Shark)

If you go to http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/ess/supserver.htm you will find some papers on 'attaching ESS to the World' If you open the ESS Supported Servers pdf, you will find a guide to offically supported servers. They tend to update this fairly often. Page 13 of this document has what IBM says they will support in a configuration for attaching to the Shark. HPUX 11.0 with MC/ServiceGuard 11.05/09 is listed, but the caveat is that the box has to be K, L, N, and V class boxes.

On another note, we have had a hard time getting IBM to fess up to everything they won't support. When we bought the Shark, the sales guy said it would 'attach to anything' A500 boxes are not on the approved list, even though they are the same general architecture as the L and N boxes. IBM's exuse was that they had not yet tested the configuration and would not certify it unless we paid them to test it. They got tired of us asking questions that they were not really prepared to answer/support, so they directed us to this page and it's contents. It appears to be a fairly dynamic thing at this point, with them added configurations and retracting configurations as they certify and find problems....

Re: MC ServiceGuard and ESS (Shark)

Based on your response, then this is an unsupported configuration to use IBM Shark ESS with MC/ServiceGuard.

Re: MC ServiceGuard and ESS (Shark)

Hello Denita,

We are an HP shop and we have a three node MC/ServiceGuard cluster. Our primary disk storage up to now has been on EMC Symmetrix disk arrays, but we just purchased a Shark and we will be gradually migrating data to it.

If you or John Payne have an ESS/Shark in a MC/SG environment and you are having problems with it, I'd sure love to hear from you as we are about to go down that same path. My e-mail address is jpoff@familydollar.com.
