HPE StoreEasy 1660 Upgrade to Windows Server IOT 2019 or 2022

Hi all,

I currently have a HPE StoreEasy 1660 that I am using for my Veeam backup repository. It's currently running Windows Storage Server 2016, which is EOSL as of now. Just wondering if any of you guys or girls have any experience doing an upgrade of it to Windows Server IOT 2019 or 2022?

If so, how easy is the upgrade? Also, how is the process like? Is there any reformat or reinstallation of the OS required using the upgrade kit?

Hi Brar,

Kindly find the upgrade process step by step.

Customers can perform a wipe & replace (aka clean install) upgrade from Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2016 directly to Microsoft Windows Server IOT 2022 for Storage or Microsoft Windows IOT 2019 for Storage to Microsoft Windows IOT 2022 for Storage

contents:
The Microsoft Windows Server IOT 2022 for Storage comes in a Kit (Order P/N S1U90A)
Windows Server Certificate of Authenticity (COA)

Upgrading StoreEasy 1X60 Storage Systems to Microsoft Windows Server IOT 2022 for Storage

Purchase upgrade kit, S1U90A, for each HPE StoreEasy 1X60 System that will be upgraded.
The upgrade kit is not free.
It includes a COA license that will replace the original COA that was shipped with the system originally.
The USB flash drive included in the kit will be also used for any future system recovery installations.

This upgrade is a wipe and replace (aka Clean Install) of the operating system partition. This means that the operating system drive is wiped clean (reformatted) and installed with a fresh version of the StoreEasy Windows Server IOT 2022 for Storage image.

There currently is not an in-place upgrade option available.

Backup
HPE recommends that the operating system and data volumes prior to beginning the upgrade.
This way you could retrieve information from a backup or restore to the original operating system if need be.

Be sure to locate installation media for your third-party applications as they will need to be installed after the upgrade process completes.

Upgrade Process:

Check the health of components especially the OS disks and replace as needed prior to the upgrade.
It is recommended to schedule a maintenance window of at least 4 hours.
During the maintenance window you will need to update the firmware on the server to the latest HPE Support Pack for ProLiant (SPP) for your hardware.
Reboot after the SPP firmware has completed.
Insert the upgrade USB drive and reboot the server and press <F11> for the one-time system boot options.
It is recommended that you physically attach the USB drive to the server and not use the iLO virtual mount.
You can perform the actual installation of the upgrade through iLO remote console or through a KVM setup.
On the one-time boot menu select the USB media and press the space bar when prompted for booting to the media.

Select HPE Recovery Media from the menu and follow the prompts to start the installation.
Once the installation has started you should not interfere with it, the initial installation takes approximately 45 minutes.
Remove the USB media when prompted and the system will reboot.

After the reboot there will be a couple of more reboots wait for it to come to the language selection page.
Initial setup begins, at this point it is the same process as performing a quick recovery of the server.
Select the language.
Accept EULA (Microsoft and HPE).
Enter the Administrator password.
Log onto the system with the Administrator password.

Power down the system and reattach any external arrays that you had detached earlier, ensure to power on the external arrays and let them fully come up before powering backup the system.
Check the status of the data drives and make sure that the disks are in an online state, if not bring them back online.
Ensure to correct any drive letter assignments.
Verify that the volumes are online and that the security settings for your volumes are set appropriately

Activate the Microsoft Server IOT 2022 for Storage license using the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) that was included with your kit.
Go to Microsoft Windows Server > local server on the right-hand side you will see Product ID and it will state “Not Activated”.
Click on the “Not Activated” and it will bring up the Enter a product key dialogue.
Attach the COA license to your system.
If you have problems with activation, a support case will need to be open through HPE Services.
The license key can only be used for one system.
