Thanks for your suggestions.
Unfortunately it is the earlier update that is causing the problem, while the later one is a blank file: I have asked the HP webmaster to deal with this, but to date nothing! It may be the answer to the problem!!
The users guide is not at all helpful in this regard.

Sorry, I have just realised what you were asking about the link page you were quoting.
I have run the MediaVault software OK, but when I click on Back up an entire hard drive, ie to start NTI Drivebackup, nothing happens, as opposed to Back up important files, which allows me to start NTI Shadow.

do you really follow procedure listed in user guide how to create a drive backup ?

Yes! As I suggested before, when I get to stage 1c, and I click on Back up entire drive (or indeed, Restore entire drive), nothing happens, as opposed to Back up important files, which then runs NTI Shadow.
