160GB SDLT Drive Media Failures

Hi,
We're using a HP Storageworks 160/320GB SDLT external drive. Connected via SCSI with a HPDL360 server. OS is Netware 6.5 and backupprogram is BackupExec 9.2.
Since we started using new SDLT tapes (c7980A) we get a lot of damaged media errors. Like this:
"Error on HA:1 ID:6 LUN:0 compaq 160GB SDLT DRV. An error has been detected during this operation that indicates that part of the media may be damaged. ... Firmware:2e2e Function: Write(5) Error: Media failure(3) Sense data: ..."
We've used al lot of new tapes but most of the backups just fail.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what might help? I've tried using a cleaning tape and restarting the hardware.
