20/40 GB DLT

Is it possible that this device can change a tape to write-protected even if it wasn't at the time it was inserted? I'm 99% sure that it isn't happening when the tape gets put in...It's just not easy to move that lever, however numerous times I will get in and the tape from the night before says write protected and the data didn't back-up. Please Help!!
