appending data to the existing media and restoring it

I Have 12/24 dat tape with backup of size 18GB.I tried to append another 405MB data to the above existing tape but it couldn't write saying tape is full and tape came out. Then I tried to restore the earlier stored data but it is showing a message to insert a continuation tape.
