Arcserve 2000 -> hardware or software compression

Hello,

Am using Arcserve2000 as a software backup with a DLT1 Tape.
Hardware comression is on.

I have heard that it might be better to turn the hardware compression OFF and turn the software compression ON to have a better ratio result.

What's your point of view ?

And how do i turn the hardware compression OFF ???

Thks for ur answers

Re: Arcserve 2000 -> hardware or software compression

Hardware compression is usualy recommanded, because all the process is made by a dedicated chip on the drive.
For compatibility reason the hardware compression routine has not evolved a lot since the beginning, and then nowadays, software compression may be more efficient in some cases, but will require more resources from your server in order to process it. Also the data software compressed are not readable by every drive, if you have not the save Backup application with the same compression algorithm, you will not be able to read and decode your data.

Always hardware, is more efficient than software.
