Can't reuse encrypted tape in MSL2024 autoloader
Hi All,
We have a MSL2024 Autoloader and use Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 to backup data. Recently we purchase HP encrypted kit that insert USB key into autoloader to perform data encryption during backup.
We test backup and restore with encrypted function enable in web interface is worked ok.
But as we find the tape can't be reused in BackupExec and can't perform backup, inventory, erase, format as we disable encrypted function in web interface.
As there is any suggestions to let us erase the encrypted tape and let the tape can be used in the other LTO4 tape device or in BackupExec without encryption enable?
Thanks a lot your help.
Best Regards,
Dichun

Re: Can't reuse encrypted tape in MSL2024 autoloader
Sure.
Download Library and Tape Tools (see the link under Value Added Software at http://www.hp.com/go/tape ).
Put the tape in the library (using L&TT Front Panel operations) or a standalone drive.
Click on "Test", select the drive that holds the tape. Make sure that the library is NOT selected.
In the drop down list box, select "Read/Write Test". THIS TEST WILL DESTROY ALL DATA ON THE TAPE. Select "Start Test".
When the tape test has completed, the encryption information will have been wiped, and the tape will operate as a fresh tape.
I'm curious why you disabled encryption after having purchased the MSL Encryption Kit... any information you can give me about why would be helpful to HP (Did we not describe the device or technology well; it didn't do what you needed or expected; business need for encryption changed or was met by another technology; etc.).
Thank you.

Re: Can't reuse encrypted tape in MSL2024 autoloader
You should be able to leave encryption on and re-use the tape in Backup Exec in the normal manner.

Re: Can't reuse encrypted tape in MSL2024 autoloader
Hi All,
Thanks a lot your message.
We'll try to install LTT to see the encrypted tape can be erased and reuse in Backup Exec or not.
- And I have a question about the encrypted function need to be disable as we use LTT to erase encrypted tape?
- Will the encrypted tape can't be recognized as we disable the encrypted function in autoloader likely we face the problem in Backup Exec?
As we found that the encryption function will be enable in Backup Exec as the autoloader encryption enable in web interface. Also, we want to reuse the encrypted tape in the other LTO4 autoloader that no encrypted function.
Also, there is no any guide or document provided from HP about how to handle this common issue.
