Cleaning Tape Question

A question came up during a demonstration of our new server:

I was telling a co-worker about how the DLT tape doesn't actually touch the recording head, resulting in less wear on the tape. The co-worker asked; if this is so, how does the cleaning tape work?

So I hit him.

The cleaning tape, does touch the head and it does wear out rather quickly (the tape cassette, that is).
