Colorado 20Gb Internal Travan Drive Problem

Hi,
My drive has been working perfectly but has suddenly stopped. I have uninstalled backup II and reinstalled. The drive fails it's self test with a 0x40A0 error; if I insert a tape cartridge the drive does nothing. Windows 98 does detect the drive and it shows correctly in control panel/system/device manager. The HP website suggests a firmware upgrade but there does not seem to be one available. Does anyone know whether the drive has a hardware fault?

Also, if I have to replace it, any recommendations? The replacement needs to be able to read my exisiting tape cartridges.

Thanks and regards

Re: Colorado 20Gb Internal Travan Drive Problem

Looks like you will have to exchange your drive, based on two points. The first being your tape does not spool up when inserted in to the drive usually a bad sign unless it isn't plugged in, and secondly I take it when you mention that it failed the self test that it is the tape diag tool's self test that it failed. That is almost always a sign that the drive needs to be exchanged. If you have had the drive for less than two years and have either registered the product or have the proof of purchase phone support can exchange the drive for you with a like new 20gb. If not in warranty than you can still exchange it just there will be a cost, again you will have to call phone support to get a price and to have the procedure done. Hope this helps

Re: Colorado 20Gb Internal Travan Drive Problem

Thanks Tom. I subsequently found a posting 'Firmware Colorado 20Gb' by Lennart Neikter on 09/22/02 which seems to describe my problem. Does this change your original response? Also, re replacement, I thought these drives were discontinued...

Re: Colorado 20Gb Internal Travan Drive Problem

Hi again - problem fixed and drive working, no exchange required! It was exactly as the post re firmware upgrade stated. Somehow the firmware got corrupted so although the upgrade is the same version, in effect it is a clean version and the drive comes back to life.

Thanks anyway.
