compaq (sony sdx-700c) AIT-3 drive

My drive backs up 45-50 gig then ejects the tape stating that the tape is full and it needs a second tape to continue. Why does it only backup this much when it should do 100 uncompressed?

Is it because the machine is fairly old/slow? Thanks
