why did i get a winnt SCSI port error during the backup process?

There could be several reasons: intermittant defective SCSI board, intermittant defective tape drive,
intermittant defective SCSI cable,
old SCSI card driver,
old tape drive firmware,
defective tape cartridge,
and probably I forgot something else.
Try to install and download HP Library and Tape Tools from here: http://www.hp.com/support/tapetools
the exercise your drive with blank tape cartridges and see what happens.
