DAT72x6 not reading tapes after server reboot
Hi,
Having wierd problems. I'm using DAT72x6 external drive on Windows 2000 Server SP4, with Retrospect 7.0. Everything works fine until server is rebooted. After reboot any tapes that were written to, and in the magazine, will hang the drive when trying to read them. I have tried these tapes in a seperate DDS drive (sony), and was able to make successful restores from them with no problems. I have tried this on two different servers - same results. Both servers have an Adaptect 39320-R adapter - same results. One server has onboard Adaptec 7896 adpaters - same results. Tried diffent cables & terminators - same results. Tried all latest bios and drivers for ALL hardware - same results. I noticed on the HP forum, a couple people had libraries going offline reading certain tapes - the issues were unresolved. I have contacted Dantz about this problem also - So far issue is unresolved. Any ideas what the problem can be? I did not notice this problem untill after 30 days buying the drive, so I can no longer return it. I need to have this problem resolved. Thanks

Re: DAT72x6 not reading tapes after server reboot
I am afraid this can't be of much help.
I have experienced a similar problem. but I used a different backup software.
It took me half a month to solve out the issue.
I would narrow down the issue by using a different backup software.
Your problem donesn't seem to be hardware related.
Try ntbackup and see if it can read the any of the tapes after a reboot. This will help isolate the problem.
BTW, have you checked if Removable Storage service is by any chance set to manual startup type?
hope it helps a little.
regards.

Re: DAT72x6 not reading tapes after server reboot
Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I did originally have Removable Storage, library & drive disabled. One work around I found is enabling the devices, then going into Removable Storage>Physical Locations>>Inventory. After windows does an inventory, Retrospect will read the tapes (at least until the next reboot!). I'm thinking it's a Retrospect driver bug (HP L&TT reports no problems, windows is using HP's drivers to do inventory - only thing not working correctly is Retrospect. Dantz says my drive is a fully supported product, but they could not tell me if drive was retested after HP released latest bios.)
