Data Protector Error using Autoloader 1/8 + Ultrium 460
- Proliant DL380
- HP 64-bit/133MHz Dual Channel SCSI U320 Adapter
- Autoloader hp StorageWorks 1/8 Ultrium 460
- Data Protector 5.5
- Windows 2003
I have run Tests on HP L&TT and all looks fine. I am able to test both items:Autoloader and Drive.
I have installed Data Protector 5.5 and when using Autoconfigure Device , Data Protector creates the following structure:
- HP ThinStor AutoLdr 1/8
- HP:Ultrium 2-SCSI_1
I am able to see all 8 slots but when I am trying to format a tape I find error [Major] [90:51]. I was searching about this error code but nothing found.
Any ideas?
This is the complete session:

Re: Data Protector Error using Autoloader 1/8 + Ultrium 460
Select Device on the Data Protector 5.5 right-click and select scan.
After scanning you should format tape and place in a your media pool.
Good luck

Re: Data Protector Error using Autoloader 1/8 + Ultrium 460
Could you translate this in English:
"No se puede ejecutar el proceso debido a un error del dispositivo de E/S."
Do you get the same error with another tape? Can you write to the tape with NT backup?
Disable the Windows medium changer and tape drive in the device manager of Windows as well. And redefine then the hardware paths in DP (scsix:y:zC instead of tapex:y:zC).
regards,
Kurt

Re: Data Protector Error using Autoloader 1/8 + Ultrium 460
Disable the Windows drivers for the tape and medium changer in the device manager.
Disable the Removable Storager service in the Windows services too.
Redefine the autoloader again and try once more the format.
best regards,
Kurt

Re: Data Protector Error using Autoloader 1/8 + Ultrium 460
- Disable Autoloader in Windows Device Manager
- Disable Tape Drive in Windows Device Manager
- Stopped and disable Windows Removable Storage Manager Service
But... error remains there.
I am sending the new output of the format proccess:

Re: Data Protector Error using Autoloader 1/8 + Ultrium 460
Can you write to a tape with eg Windows NT backup (enable the tape device driver first again)? Just to exclude the possibility of a hardware problem with the autoloader.
What block size are you using? The default block size (64 kb) is fine of course.

Re: Data Protector Error using Autoloader 1/8 + Ultrium 460
Can you write to a tape with eg NT backup? If this works, you know at least it is a DP issue.
Apply the latest scsitab file of DP too. You can download it from the 'Device and SAN support matrices' at http://www.openview.hp.com/products/datapro/spec_0001.html
What is the output of 'devbra -dev'? The command is found in program files\omniback\bin. It gives again the hardware paths to the autoloader.
best regards,
Kurt

Re: Data Protector Error using Autoloader 1/8 + Ultrium 460
When I use NTbackup it begins to write to tape and it shows its estimation of 15 days to write 1 Gb to the tape :-(
Finally, (15' after and 8 Mb saved to the tape) NTbackup returned an error to the windows event log (hplto and symmpi)
Event type: Error
Source: symmpi
EventID: 9
Description: \Device\Scsi\symmpi1 timeout
Event type: Error
Source: hplto
Id. suceso: 7
Description: \Device\Tape0 has a bad block.
Have I an error Hardware??? How is it possible that NTbackup has saved 8 Mb to the tape and then it has crashed reporting HW errors?
Otherwise, I am using the lastest scsitab from the web.
... and about devbra output:
Exch HP:ThinStor AutoLdr Path: "scsi4:0:6:0" SN: "MXA05050DM"

Re: Data Protector Error using Autoloader 1/8 + Ultrium 460
I was changing all parts involved:
- server
- Software installation
- SCSI adapter
... trouble remains there!!
I was able to write and read the label tape but I was not able to write a backup.
Solution: To Change SCSI cable. Now the backup system is performing very well.
Thank you for your collaboration
