I have a backup that is scheduled to run early in the morning everyday so that it is finished by the afternoon. It is backing up two servers one that is attached directly to the autoloader and another that is connected through the network. I'm using Data Protector Express SP4 with two licenses: BB117AT and BB122AA.
It seems to be working fine but every so often it has come up with one of two errors when it tries to backup the networked server:
Error 51: Socket failure
Error 5: Invalid handle type
These errors are found in the log file of the backup. It also does not start the backup of that server. Is there a way to fix this so that it doesn't happen or does anyone know what these errors mean especially the error 5? Thanks for your help!

Hi Dave,
Both of these errors are related to network communication issues between the two servers. You didn't mention which OS you are running but I have seen this more between a Linux and a MSWindows machine than between two like machines.
Sometimes is caused by firewalls getting in the way. Other times it is related to having two network cards in one of the systems and DP Express seems to try to grab the wrong card.
After checking the firewall to make sure that isn't blocking DP Express, one fix I have seen work is to put an entry in the local hosts file for the IP address and name of the other system.

Re: Data Protector Express Error
Hey Dave L, Both of the servers are Server 2003. I am also going to try adding bindTo=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
to the dpconifg.ini file under the section. If it is a problem with choosing a NIC card I would think that this would also help. Thanks again for your help!
