DLT VS80 1/8 Auto-loader

I just want to ask how to enable "Multi-LUN Support" using Windows2000 Adv. Server platform. The problem we're encountering is that, the 2nd tape do not mount automatically when the 1st tape is already full. The total dbase to be backup is 180GB and it requires 3 tapes to use.

thanks,
jerico

Re: DLT VS80 1/8 Auto-loader

Multi-Lun support means your HBA is able to communicate to multiple logical units (LUNs) at a single SCSI ID.

If you have an autoloader that utilizes a single SCSI ID (like the 1/8 VS80), then only the drive will be seen if your HBA does not support multi-LUN addressing (or it is disabled). The LUN for the drive is 0 (the default), and the LUN for the autoloader is 1.

When your system boots, and in windows control panel, you will only see the drive listed as a device, and not the autoloader, if you do not have LUN support.

Typically the backup application manages the autoloader device, and automatically changes tape. However, you can also configure an autoloader (which is different than a library) to automatically load the next tape when the previous tape is unloaded (this is called "sequential mode").

Are you using a backup application that supports the autoloader as a device?

I hope that answers your question.

Re: DLT VS80 1/8 Auto-loader

Thanks David.
By the way, they're using Brighstor r11.1 as backup software. The Brighstor don't have any options/agent for multiple slot as long as it is single drive. They have TAPE LIBRARY OPTION which is use when your tape drive has multiple drive.I already advise the client to purchase separate HBA which is HP 64-bit/133-MHz single channel Ultra320 SCSI HBA G2 (374654-B21).Is this correct?
Before they're using the built-in SCSI of DL380G4.
I hope the autoloader will work already after using the HBA.

Yes, looking at www.hp.com/go/ebs and opening the compatability matrix, that is a supported HBA.

I assume that is a smart array controller. They do not support LUNs, and therefore that would prohibit the autoloader from being seen by the OS.

With the new HBA, you should be OK.
