These commands will help. Can you attach the results?
What type of tape drive?
Here's the syntax for fbackup and frecover:
"...fbackup 0y -f /dev/rmt/0m..." (* Full system backup *)
"...fbackup -0y -g /tmp/graph_file -f /dev/rmt/0m..." (* Full backup of file system listed in graph file, see man pages. *)

Is the SCSI bus shared with any other devices ? It will only run as fast as the slowest device.

I have also tried many other device files (with the same error in each case).

Just read your prob again "host:/dev/rmt/
You doing remote backups? have you edited /.rhosts & /etc/hosts.equiv ?
