help installing compaq 20/40gb dat model eod006 on solaris 8

hello,
I'm trying to install compaq model eod006 20/40gb dat scsi drive on proliant dl380 (800mhz cpu).
I've installed the HP drivers for solaris x86 (version 1.7) from the floppies (7 of them).
I did touch /reconfigure but when I go to the /dev/rmt directory, there are no devices on there.
I also tried a mt -f /dev/rmt/0 status and I get errors saying file doesn't exist.
There are no other scsi devices on server, just raid controller and tape drive.
How can I get tape to come up?
I also looked at /kernel/drv/st.conf, file looks fine but no compaq entries. Just HP entries.
Tried finding docs about this drive on HP website but it keeps referring to a unix configuration guide. I can't find it for this model tape drive!!

Okay, you did the touch /reconfigure, but you don't mention rebooting after it. All that does is set the system up to do the same as a "boot -r" from the OK prompt.

The st.conf file may not have specific entries which mention the type of device you're using. However, there will be st.conf entries out there somewhere for this type of device. All you need to do is to add the correct lines to that file, and the x86 and SPARC versions are likely to be identical. The man page on st is also a good reference, even if it does take a lot of effort to understand all the nuances of the entries.
A sysadmin should never cross his fingers in the hope commands will work. Makes for a lot of mistakes while typing.

Strange it is very hard to find any details product specifications or anything related to this product:

Compaq Digital Storage DAT 20/40 GB model EOD006

Maybe thanks to the buying of compaq by HP...
