Host, via a SCSI Prevent/Allow....

We have a HP MSL5052 tape library attached via fibre to our SAN environment. We are sharing this library between 2 servers using Veritas Backup Exec 9.1 with it's SAN Shared Storage Option.

It has been working fine for several weeks, but now we are receiving a message whilst trying to open the tape library doors:

"Host, via a SCSI Prevent/Allow command, is preventing magazine access"

I have tried using the unlock command from Backup Exec to resolve this, but the job fails and you still cannot open the doors. I have tried setting the option on the tape library for "Prevent Allow" Inhibits and Ignored, but neither setting makes any difference. I have also set the Mail Slot option to Enabled, but still no joy.

Any ideas would be greatly appriciated.

Don't worry, I have found a resolution. You need to run an unlock command using the Backup Exec command line utility:

BEMCMD -o105 -a"MSL5052"

This creates a job that completes successfully!!!??!! ... and the doors can be opened.

We have the same problem using Arcserve for Netware.

Any ideas ?

Re: Host, via a SCSI Prevent/Allow....

Unfortunately, I have had very little experience of ArcServe or NetWare.

Is there an Unlock option or something similar on the device?

The problem is that the Backup S/W is issuing a command to the library to lock the doors whilst a backup is in progress, but it is not issuing an unlock command afterwards, so this needs to be done manually.

Does the Dismount Magazine option work?

Or, perhaps you should install Backup Exec.. ;-)
