How to erase Data DAT tape to reuse as Audio DAT tape?

I have a ton of DAT tape that I no longer use for daily backups, but I could use for audio DAT tape recording in my studio. I have run them through the audio tape machine to reformat and erase them, but I sure could use a real techo-guy solution to reclaim these expensive little jewels. They take real-time 90 minutes to erase the way I'm currently doing it.

DAT tapes used for backup? There is only one of more than 6 version of DDS (the proper name for the digital storage media) that will work in audio systems. That is the 60 meter DDS-1 tape. The DAT tape stores 90 minutes of audio so formatting (which allows high speed searches) requires the same time (90 mins) to format. There is no relationship between DDS and DAT formats.

if you are taking backup through SAM then it will erase old data and write current one.
you can check it your backup by getlist in SAM backup window.
