HP 30ux Redhat 9

I have an HP 30ux (AA961) Optical drive with 30 GO rewritable media.
With hp_ltt tools, all is ok, but can i used the rw media like a removable hardisk?
example:
fdisk /dev/sda
mkfs /dev/sda
Actually all this command failed.
8192 block size is not supported.
Can you help me or indicate me how use the media without hp_ltt tools ?
(Sorry , i have a very little english)
