We have an NT4 server backing up to an HP C1533A using NT Backup. Recently, the backup has started to fail. Upon checking the logs the only error given is 'Unrecognizable data'. The cleaning tape has been used several times but to no avail, and the DDS tapes are only a couple of months old. Any ideas anyone? Please?

Re: HP C1533A - Unrecognizable Data
Matthew,
- try HP LTT http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg50128.html ;
- try cleaning drive 5 times. Note that DDS drives should be cleaned after every 5 full backups or 20 tape pulling hours;
- do you store tapes in correct way (temperature, magnetic fields etc)?
- try new (just unpacked) HP tape.

Solution
The Surestore 6000 is a pretty old tape drive and may be failing at this point. Download Library and Tape Tools from here to test functionality. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=lpg50128
