We use a HP Surestore DAT 8 and the DDS-2 Data Cartridge, 8 GB, but after 4 GB the backup is stopped ......

The Dat 8 tape drive will backup 4 gig of uncompressed data. The max it will put on a tape is 8 gig. However it has been my experience that you will only get about 6 gig on a tape depending on the compression ratio.
How much data are you backing up? Check to see what the compression ratio is in your backup software. You should be using the software compression. Also if you are backing up a software that already compresses the files when you exit it, the files are already compressed and cannot be compressed any further.

Our backup is app. 4,5 - 5 Gig.
As backup software we use Backup Exec.
